Floor Preparation Services

Prior to laying screed, it is vital that the subfloor is prepared correctly. Failure to do so can result in an unsuccessful floor installation and issues with damp and moisture damage. Sigma Screed are experts in subfloor preparation and provide a comprehensive range of services to meet the needs of our clients. Our work is carried out using the highest quality materials and in accordance with British Standards and best practices.

Overview

Floor preparation for liquid screed typically involves:

  • Cleaning the subfloor

  • Laying a damp proof membrane

  • Installing a layer of insulation

  • Applying an expansion strip

  • Fitting a tanking membrane

Subfloor Preparation

With the use of laser levels, the evenness of the subfloor is assessed and any high/low points are removed as required. The surface is then cleaned to remove debris and contaminants, and a 1200 gauge damp proof membrane is installed.

The damp proof membrane forms an impermeable barrier and prevents damp from working its way into the insulation, safeguarding the thermal properties of the material.

Insulation

Screed is commonly laid on top of some form of rigid floor insulation such as PIR or EPS boards. Properly installed insulation makes a significant difference to winter heat loss and helps maximise energy efficiency.

Once the insulation boards are selected based on the required compressive strength, thermal properties and depth, they are tightly butt jointed with staggered joints. Small gaps are then filled with sand or expanding foam to eliminate any lateral movement.

Expansion Strip & Tanking Membrane

Once the insulation is installed, an 8-10mm foam edge strip is applied to the perimeter. This allows for minor expansion of the screed as it dries, and if underfloor heating is installed, allows the screed to expand and contract as it heats and cools.

A layer of 500 gauge polythene is then laid on top of the insulation to at least the height of the edge strip, this is known as the tanking membrane. The tanking membrane encapsulates the screed and stops it from escaping once poured.
